Masai Mara

The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Africa's most famous and spectacular wildlife destinations. Located in southwestern Kenya along the Tanzanian border, the reserve is named after the Maasai people, the ancestral inhabitants of the area. The Mara is renowned for its exceptional populations of lions, leopards, cheetahs, and elephants, as well as the annual Great Migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles that cross the Mara River between July and October. This dramatic event, often called the "Greatest Show on Earth," sees massive herds braving crocodile-infested waters in their search for fresh grazing. The landscape is characterized by vast open grasslands, rolling hills, and acacia woodlands, bisected by the Mara and Talek rivers. Beyond the Big Five, the reserve hosts over 470 bird species and countless other wildlife including giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and various antelope species.
